THE PROBIOTICS – WHY DO WE HEAR ABOUT THEM SO MUCH?

THE PROBIOTICS – WHY DO WE HEAR ABOUT THEM SO MUCH?

WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS, PREBIOTICS AND POSTBIOTICS and WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?

Probiotic comes from the Greek pro-bios, meaning ‘for life’ or ‘for life’s benefit’. This term refers to different bacterial strains that are attributed a potential protective effect on the human organism. Probiotics are ‘good’ bacteria that are able to resist the action of gastric juice and biliary secretion and settle in the gut by adhering to epithelial cells and therefore counteracting the adhesion of certain pathogenic germs. They can be integrated from outside and positively modify the microbiota of the intestine and also that of the skin, which are closely linked. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are the food of our good bacteria. They are organic substances (carbohydrates and olisaccharides) that stimulate the growth of the good bacteria that make up the skin microbiota, which is the collection of microorganisms, mainly bacteria, phages and viruses that constitute the skin. They support the energy metabolism of the bacteria that make up our microflora, optimise the host environment, and improve the physiological balance in general. Finally, Postbiotics are defined as the functional molecules of the good bacteria present in the skin, which store the necessary hydration and strengthen the skin barrier.

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF PROBIOTICS IN COSMETIC PRODUCTS?

In order to achieve and maintain skin balance, new concepts of product functionality are constantly being explored in the cosmetics sector, focusing on commensal microorganisms in the skin through the application of probiotics. This is implemented either by bringing ‘friendly’ microorganisms directly to the skin, or by enriching cosmetic products with prebiotics, thus substances that favour the development of microorganism species that protect physiological skin functions at the expense of pathogens.

Kroll, a company that has distinguished itself in the professional cosmetic chemical sector since 1979, has developed an innovative system of Prebiotics and Postbiotics, used in professional hand wash products and for daily hand and body hygiene. This system promotes the nutrition and activity of the ‘good’ microorganisms in the skin, protects the skin barrier from the harmful substances the skin comes into contact with every day, and maintains the skin’s balance and normal skin function.

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF PROBIOTICS IN CHEMICALS AND DETERGENTS?

When you use very aggressive detergents, sanitisers or disinfectants, you think you are doing a deep, beneficial cleaning, but in reality, in addition to dirt, you are also removing a large number of micro-organisms, both pathogenic, or bad ones, and good, protective ones. And that’s not all: the micro-organisms that have managed to survive the product used for cleaning are often the strongest and most resistant ones, the ones that with time could evolve to become more dangerous and harmful, causing possible health problems.

Interchem Italia, a manufacturer of detergents and professional cleaning systems, has come up with an organic version of its best-known detergent for deep floor cleaning. The probiotics inside, deposited on the surface, produce enzymes that, both during and after cleaning, naturally degrade organic residues and, by keeping the bacterial flora created active, effectively counteract the growth of pathogenic bacteria responsible for bad odours, forming a healthy and protective microbiota on the surfaces. The probiotics continue to work for days after cleaning, providing a long-lasting clean effect. The results are amazing, making probiotic cleaners an excellent choice for advanced, continuous and above all environmentally sustainable cleaning.
